Major pharma provider design system

Aligning enterprise teams, compliance, and product delivery through systems thinking.

This engagement was about more than a component library. It was about creating a shared operating model for product teams, governance, and regulated workflows in a pharma ecosystem. I led the strategy, team alignment, and launch planning for a design system that needed to work for clinicians, product owners, and regulatory partners.

Role

Design leader & systems architect

Directed product strategy, governance, and system adoption across design and engineering teams.

Scope

Product, governance, design system

Enterprise workflows, clinical UX patterns, accessibility, and compliance guardrails.

Outcome

Shared operating model

Created governance and adoption plans that reduced rework and aligned clinical, product, and regulatory teams.

Metric

Faster system adoption

Reduced approval cycles for regulated UI patterns and improved cross-team consistency.

What I owned

  • Defined the design system strategy and identified the business and regulatory problems it needed to solve.
  • Led cross-functional alignment across design, engineering, product, and compliance stakeholders.
  • Built the governance model, release cadence, and adoption plan for the system.
  • Created a product-first roadmap that connected system investment to enterprise outcomes.

Approach

I started with stakeholder interviews and a design audit, then mapped the gaps between current product delivery and a repeatable system approach. The focus was on three key levers:

  • Shared language: Defined enterprise UX principles, component taxonomy, and accessible patterns that could be adopted by multiple teams.
  • Governance: Established decision rights, contribution workflows, and compliance checkpoints so the system could evolve without slowing delivery.
  • Adoption: Designed onboarding and stakeholder reviews that made the system useful for product owners, designers, and regulatory reviewers.

Outcome

The work produced a design system foundation and a governance playbook that enabled consistent execution across clinical and enterprise product teams. Teams gained clarity on which patterns were approved, what needed compliance review, and how to ship faster without sacrificing quality. The system also created a stronger partnership between design and compliance leadership, reducing the number of rework cycles on regulated UI experiences.

Reflection

The strongest part of this engagement was not the components themselves, but the operating model around them. In future iterations, I would invest even earlier in shared metrics and a launch plan that connects system adoption directly to product velocity and risk reduction.
